| Strength, Clarity, Conflict The three attributes I work toward
in my paintings are strength, clarity, and conflict.
Strength means the type of picture that arrests your attention
from anywhere in a room. A painting that demands your attention and
won't let go.
Clarity is speaking [painting] plainly. Say what you mean
and paint like you mean it. Clarity is also the good friend of
editing. Less is more. Get to the point with as little fuss as
possible.
Conflict seems essential to all art. Light and shadow; high note,
low note; love, hate. These varied contrasts create the theater
of the art.
I think every picture you make is a culmination of every picture
and every thing you have ever seen. |
